Democrat Lisa Johnson prevailed in a three-way primary race for Union County Tax Collector and will face Republican Chris Mecusker in the November General Election.

Lisa Johnson

PARTY:  Democratic

AGE:  47

FAMILY:  Married 27 years to Nick Johnson; 2 daughters, Brittany (Traye) Tetstone, Lacey (Roger) Barnett; 6 grandchildren

OCCUPATION:  Assistant tax collector

EDUCATION:  1983 graduate Union Coounty High School; Certified Florida Collector's Assistant

POLITICAL EXPERIENCE:  "This is the first time I have personally run for office, but have worked 25 combined years for 2 Tax Collectors."

HOW DO YOU THINK YOU CAN HELP VOTERS IN A WAY OTHERS IN THIS RACE CAN'T?

  1. Experience: I am the only candidate with experience in the Office of the Tax Collector. The training, education and day-to-day experiences of working in the office have provided me with a wealth of comprehensive understanding of the requirements necessary to do the job and meet the needs of the public.
  2. Customer Satisfaction: The citizens of this County are our consumers. They are the "users" of our service, and deserve to be treated with respect, coutesy and kindness. Although some aspects of our service, such as the new State requirements for the issuance of a driver's license, are time consuming and cause the customer a great deal of work to gather the required items, it is our job to assist them through the process, to make it as painless as possible.
  3. Fiscal Responsibility: In these difficult economic times, every family has experienced greater hardships on their household budget. The County and State's resources have been stretched to the limits as well. With my knowledge and experience in the budgeting process of the Tax Collector's Office, I will strive to bring quality, friendly service to the citizens of Union County, while maintaining my commitment to cost the tax payers as little as possible to do so.

HOW DO YOU THINK YOU CAN HELP VOTERS IN A WAY OTHERS IN THIS RACE CAN'T?

  • "I can provide continuity of service to the voters and citizens, making sure their needs are met and services are provided without interruption. If any other candidate were elected, it would take time for them to learn the office and understand the laws and procedures which place mandates on how things are handled. I would like the opportunity to prove to our citizens that we can continue to meet their needs, while providing them with the kind of competent, capable and friendly service they want and deserve."

WHAT WOULD YOU HOPE TO BE REMEMBERED FOR ACCOMPLISHING AFTER SERVING IN THIS OFFICE?

  • "I would like for people to remember me as someone who helped them in their time of need...someone who assisted them in getting the answers they needed, while making their lives a little less difficult. I would like to be remembered as someone who was always available to talk my customers through a difficult process, or lend an ear when they simply needed to vent their frustrations for a little while. They say that people will forget what you say and what you did, but will never forget how you made them feel. I want people to feel welcome in the Tax Collector's Office, and to feel as if we care about them and their needs. I want to be a working Tax Collector for ALL the people!"

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE TOP THREE ISSUES IN THIS RACE?

  1. Improving the quality of service and professionalism in the tax collector's office.
  2. Modernizing the tax collector's office by establishing updated computer systems, programs, and website to provide more efficient services to tax payers.

HOW DO YOU THINK YOU CAN HELP VOTERS IN A WAY OTHERS IN THIS RACE CAN'T?
