Troubled former Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Jimmy Smith was back in jail Wednesday after the Florida Highway Patrol said a trooper found cocaine and marijuana in his car during a traffic stop.

Smith was arrested after being pulled over at a BP gas station near the intersection of Interstate 95 and Golfair Boulevard.

According to the FHP, the traffic stop was initiated to check the legality of Smith's car's window tint. They said after stopping his car, Smith got out and stood by the driver's door.

The trooper asked Smith to roll down his driver's side window so that he could check the tint. That's when, according to the FHP, Smith opened the driver's door and the trooper smelled a strong odor of burned marijuana coming from inside the vehicle and observed marijuana residue on the driver's seat and on the center console.

Witnesses who work in the area said the former NFL player was handcuffed and placed into the back of a trooper's cruiser before being taken to FHP headquarters on Normandy Boulevard.

FHP said a further search of Smith's car resulted in the discovery of an additional three grams marijuana and one half-smoked marijuana cigarette, rolling papers, six grams of crack cocaine and powder cocaine residue on a business card.

Witnesses said Smith's 2009 Mercedes was towed away.

Smith was questioned by the FHP and charged with driving while license suspended, possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana, possession of crack cocaine, possession with intent to sell crack cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Smith laid down across the back seat of the FHP cruiser that delivered him to the Duval County Jail, where he was booked at about 8 p.m.

The Jaguars legend has been in trouble with the law in the past. Last August, police arrested Smith and he was accused of driving drunk, having an open beer in the car and possession of marijuana.

At a court hearing in March, Smith was in court attempting to get the DUI and drug charges thrown out. A judge denied the request to drop the charges.

Also, in 2001, Smith was arrested on a DUI charge. That charge was dropped.

Smith played for the Jaguars for 11 years and was a leader in catches, yardage and receiving touchdowns. He also played in five Pro Bowls. He retired in 2005.

Smith was being held without bond until a first appearance before a judge Thursday morning.
