Kidney cysts are pouches of fluid found on your kidneys, the Mayo Clinic states.

According to the Mayo Clinic, in most cases the cysts are noncancerous and don’t cause issues. These are called simple kidney cysts. However, some cysts can signal more serious problems.

The Mayo Clinic states it’s unclear what causes simple kidney cysts. They can appear on one or both kidneys. They are usually found during an imaging test for an unrelated condition.

Simple cysts usually don’t require treatment.
