Doctor, patient

According to the Mayo Clinic, kidney stones are hard deposits made up of mineral and acid salts that develop inside your kidneys. These stones crystallize and can affect your urinary tract.

The Mayo Clinic states that passing kidney stones can be painful, but there is usually no permanent damage.

In severe cases, surgery may be needed to remove the stones; otherwise the Mayo Clinic says the stones should pass on their own.
