According to the Mayo Clinic, cystitis refers to the inflammation of the bladder.

The Mayo Clinic states that often cystitis is caused by a bacterial infection. Bladder infections, or UTIs, can become serious if not treated.

Cystitis can also be a result of reaction to certain drugs, catheters or other irritants, the Mayo Clinic states.

Antibiotics are typically used to treat bacterial cystitis.
