100s get free prostrate exams at Memorial Hospital

Event part of Positively Jax initiative

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime and the disease is treatable if diagnosed early. To help make it easier to get checked, Memorial Hospital held free prostate screenings Saturday.

Slots for free screenings for both prostate and colorectal cancer offered by Memorial Hospital filled up quickly.

Some 370 appointments were made. Many of those who were screened Saturday said the check-up was surprisingly easy.

"I think its great a lot of people don't have health insurance, other reasons to come up with why not to come but when a bunch of guys at same time we're all lamenting about the fear of going through it but when we find out how easy it is its well worth it," said Herb Jones.

Men 40 and older who have not been screened for prostate cancer in the last 12 months are encouraged get themselves checked.
