Police: Man shot breaking into Mayport home

Police rope off two blocks of Cypress Landing Drive

MAYPORT, Fla. – Homicide detectives were investigating a fatal shooting Thursday morning in the 2200 block of Cypress Landing Drive.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said a man shot and killed someone breaking into his mother's home just before 9 a.m. The son was the only person home at the time.

Detectives were questioning neighbors about what they saw, while crime scene investigators processed the scene inside the home.

"Speaking to neighbors in the area to see what they actually saw," said Sgt. Michael Paul, of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. "The house has been cleared. It's safe. Patrol officers did a safety sweep of the house, so we're not worried about anybody being inside. And at this point, we're going to take our time, do our investigation to determine what happened."

Police roped off about two blocks on Cypress Landing Drive, from Palm Landing Drive to Magnolia Landing Drive, during the investigation.

"It's rough to happen in my own neighborhood and especially since it's a home invasion," neighbor Alex Damiani said. "And I'm a stay-at-home mommy and that scares me, especially right after I leave the house it happens."

Damiani said from her perspective, the area is generally quiet and crime just doesn't seem to happen there.

"Things can sit outside and not get stolen," she said. "I never hear of any altercations, even between neighbors. Don't hear of this sort of thing."

This year, there have been eight home burglaries, four car burglaries and two robberies within a one-mile radius of Thursday's shooting, according to JSO's crime mapping tool.

"It terrifies me because this isn't my only kid," Damiani said. "I have two more, so it's just her and I during the day, and then I have a 4- and a 9-year-old I have to watch, and this neighborhood is kids up and down the street all day playing."

Anyone with any information about the shooting is asked to call the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at 904-630-0500.
