Freezing weather has wiped out a traveling flea circus in Germany.

Circus director Robert Birk told BBC News he found his entire 300-flea troupe dead inside a transport box last week.

The circus scrambled to find a new batch in time for an open-air fair it was scheduled to perform at in the western German town of Mechernich-Kommern, according to The Associated Press.

Fortunately, an insect expert at a nearby university was able to provide 60 replacement fleas.

Training began immediately, and while the replacements lacked a little pizzazz, they were able to perform in time for the fair's first show Sunday.

"I worked solidly for two days," Birk told the Online Focus website.

It was the first time his circus had lost all of its fleas at once to the cold.
