It's the picture that's burning up the Internet.

A California Highway Patrol officer with a big heart rescued a Chihuahua stranded on a busy interstate Friday afternoon.

The tiny dog was shivering with fright when troopers found it perched on a roadway median on Interstate 680 in Contra Costa, Los Angeles TV station KNBC reported.

"This little dog needed some help off I-680 freeway today. We're glad he's safe," the department tweeted.

Authorities used a protein bar to lure and then safely pick up the abandoned animal.

It was later taken in by Contra Costa Animal Services.

A department spokesperson told San Francisco TV station KTVU that they weren’t sure how the Chihuahua got there, but noted it's not unusual for people to abandon their pets on the highway.

Contra Costa Animal Services posted an update on Facebook Saturday, saying the Chihuahua "may already have a home if her owner doesn't come for her."
