A Massachusetts couple has struck it rich with a scratch-off lottery ticket they accidentally threw away.

Joseph and Joanne Zagami bought the $5 ticket from a vending machine while grocery shopping, according to the Massachusetts State Lottery.

They tucked the ticket into one of their grocery bags, but forgot about it, tossing it in the trash with the rest of the bags.

The next day, Joseph Zagami asked his wife if she had scratched off the ticket.

When she said no, they dug it out of the garbage and became instant millionaires.

The couple claimed their prize on Wednesday, telling lottery officials they planned to pay off their mortgage and other bills, help family members out and take a vacation.
