One resident of the Ocean Villas condominiums was taken to Flagler Hospital early Thursday morning after a fire broke out in oceanfront complex in St. Augustine Beach.

St. Johns County Fire-Rescue crews got a call about the fire in the 850 block of A1A Beach Boulevard about 4:20 a.m.

Firefighters said the fire started in one unit and spread to others in the complex. The building was evacuated.

Fifteen county fire units and a ladder truck from the St. Augustine Fire Department arrived to flames and put the fire out within 20 minutes, according to Lt. Bob Snell with St. Johns County Fire Rescue.

"Firefighters made access to the single unit that was on the second and third story of the building," Fire-Rescue spokesman Jeremy Robshaw said. "They got on scene and saw active fire and were able to extinguish it very quickly."

"The second and third floor of that unit, we are estimating some pretty extensive damage, to the first floor sustaining primarily some water damage," Robshaw said.

Firefighters then extinguished smaller pockets of fire that spread to several adjoining units.

"Anytime you have smoke in one unit, it basically filters through the others, so there might be some minor smoke damage in some of the other units in that building," Robshaw said.

The person injured was reported to have non-life-threatening injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation by local firefighters and the State Fire Marshal's office.

Although residents had to evacuate the building, no one is displaced because of the fire.
