One lane of I-95 southbound near mile marker 319 in St. Johns County was closed after a tractor-trailer caught fire just after 2 a.m. Thursday.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver of the big rig said the right rear brake assembly of the car hauler had caught fire and he pulled over.
The driver, Macial Rodriguez, of Kissimmee, tried to put out the fire with and extinguisher, but the fire started to spread to the cars on the trailer.
Seven of new Volkwagon Jettas valued at about $140,000 were damaged.
The driver was not hurt.
While the fire was out shortly after St. Johns County firefighters arrived, due to the unstability of the trailer, the inside lane was to remain closed until the trailer could be removed.
Troopers estimated the road would not reopen until about noon.
