According to St. Johns County Fire-Rescue, a woman in an SUV failed to stop for a school bus on the southbound exit of Interstate 95 onto County Road 206.
The crash was reported just before 9 a.m., with rescue personnel, St. Johns County deputies and the Florida Highway Patrol arriving within minutes.
The driver, 43-year-old Darla Boyd, of St. Augustine, had to be cut out of the vehicle.
Boyd was transported to Flagler Hospital in serious but stable condition.
The 39 students headed to Pedro Menendez High School were not hurt. They were transferred to a second bus to continue on to school.
The crash was being investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol.
According to the FHP report, Darla Boyd was distracted by trying to retrieve something that had fallen from the passenger seat and failed to see the bus in time to stop.
Troopers said Boyd would be charged with careless driving.
