Traffic on Interstate 95 at the 20th Street Expressway slowed to a crawl early Thursday morning after a chain-reaction crash involving an SUV, a big rig, a school bus and two Jacksonville police cars.
It began just before 6 a.m. when a car went off the highway and flipped upside down. Two Jacksonville Sheriff's Office cruisers had responded to that crash when...
With officers were on that scene, an SUV tried to enter I-95 northbound and hit the side of a tractor-trailer, which then hit a school bus. No children were on board.
The impact of the school bus caused the big rig to jackknife and strike the two patrol vehicles who had responded to the first crash.
The cruisers one one of the other vehicles were pushed into the ditch beside the northbound lanes of I-95.
The two JSO officers, the driver of the SUV that hit the semi and the initial driver in the single-vehicle crash were taken to the hospital with what were described as minor injuries.
"My heart sank when I saw the crash, but fortunately everyone that was transported was transported in non-life-threatening condition with no serious injuries," JSO spokeswoman Melissa Bujeda said.
Police say Florida's move-over law requires that motorists to move away and down when passing emergency vehicles with lights activate.
"You're supposed to move over a lane of traffic and slow down," Bujeda said. "And, if you're not able to move over you're supposed to slow down to 20 miles per hour."
