2 killed, 1 injured in crash on JTB

Investigators suspect alcohol was factor in crash

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Two young men were killed and a third seriously injured Tuesday night in a single-vehicle crash on J. Turner Butler Boulevard.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a Honda Accord driven by 23-year-old John Stevens was westbound on JTB near the Interstate 295 interchange about 9:40 p.m. when it ran off the road and struck several trees.

Cullen Johnson, 21, of Ponte Vedra Beach, and Stevens, of Jacksonville, were both pronounced dead at the scene. Jacob Williams, 20, of Jacksonville, was taken to UF Health Jacksonville with serious injuries. He was riding in the front passenger seat.

Troopers say only Johnson was wearing a seat belt.

Traffic homicide investigators say the car was attempting to pass another vehicle, and that speed and weather may be factors in the crash.

The original FHP report said they did not suspect alcohol played a factor in the accident, but later revised that saying they were waiting for toxicology reports as they continued investigating the accident.
