2 shot at discount food store; 2nd shooting in 2 days

Victims were in Blue Star Discount Food store at time of shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police are investigating a shooting that happened Tuesday night at a store on North Myrtle Avenue -- the same business where a woman was shot on Monday.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said officers were dispatched to the Blue Star Discount Food Store on North Myrtle Avenue just after 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Officers found a victim inside the store with a gunshot wound. That victim was transported to UF Health Jacksonville.

Officers at the scene were then notified of a second gunshot victim who had walked into UF Health as a result of the same shooting.

Both victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Police said the victims were at the store when unknown suspects arrived and started shooting. The victims were shot and the suspects then fled the scene.

Police do not have any suspect information. The violent crimes task force was notified and conducted an on-scene investigation.

A woman was shot in the hand outside the same store on Monday afternoon while in her car with several children.

Investigators said the shootings were not related.

Hubert Cummings said he took cover when he heard gunshots across the street Tuesday night.

"I recently got married, got a wife and a 12-year-old stepson. We all hit the floor," Cummings said.

One resident who didn't want to be identified said to two cars pulled in the gas station and several young men jumped out and started shooting at another group of young men standing out front.

"They were running in the store after the individuals that were standing outside the store," he said. "And them guys ran in after and I heard about seven to eight shots."

He said the men then ran back to their cars, with one telling another, "We got this," and going back into to the store briefly.

Then police came.

"I was in a state of shock at first because a day earlier a female was shot over there," the resident said.

In that shooting, surveillance video shows a car driving by and someone firing as a man gets into a red car. The bullet hit the hand of a woman sitting inside with her children.

With violence so close, Cumming said he's faced with hard choices.

"Although I was raised in this house, I'm ready to give it up," he said.
