Police: Suspect bragged about first homicide of 2013

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police have arrested two men in connection with the killing of an 18-year-old while selling him a gun.

Markeith Anglin, 19, and Marquis Bates, 18, are charged with murder in the shooting death of Dante Steele on Jan. 4.

Steel was found dead in the 5100 block of Birkenhead Road just before 7 p.m.

Police said the suspects robbed him of his cellphone, money, EBT card, bicycle and other personal belongings.

An acquaintance of the suspects told investigators that Anglin was bragging about committing the first homicide of 2013, according to the police report. The acquaintance also told police that Bates told him about the killing and that Anglin shot Steele.

Anglin was arrested Jan. 15, and police determined the firearm he had was the same one used to kill Steele.

Bates was arrested Jan. 27 on an outstanding arrested warrant for robbery. Police said he admitted to being at the scene at the time of the killing, but denied knowledge of what happened.
