The man known as “Dr. Beach," Stephen Leatherman, has released his ‘Top 10 beaches of 2013’ in the United States list.

There are three Florida beaches on the list. Coming in at No. 3 is St. George Island State Park in the Florida Panhandle. The park is on a barrier island overlooking the Gulf of Mexico.

Barefoot Beach Preserve County Park in Bonita Springs is No. 6. Barefoot Beach is a family friendly spot that offers smaller waves and fine sand loaded with shells.

“The surf is gentle with waves generally being measure in inches and the water is very shalle," Dr. Leatherman says.

The third Florida beach that made the list is Cape Florida State Park in Key Biscayne, which made No. 7.

“The Florida Lighthouse allows for a breath-taking view of this beautiful beach," Leatherman says.

Dr. Beach's report is based on 50 criteria each year that includes sand softness, rip currents, pollution, life guards and safety record.

Leatherman, a professor at Florida International University in Miami, evaluates 650 beaches to reach his top 10.
