30 cars vandalized at Southside apartment complex

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – About 30 cars were vandalized overnight Monday into Tuesday at a Southside apartment complex.

Residents at the Preserves at Paradise Island apartment complex off Southside Blvd near the Interstate 95 exit woke up to the damage.

"I was just talking to a girl around the corner up there that was taping her window up," said resident Sally Brendell. "So yeah, it's bad. That's ridiculous."

Kyle Hansen said he's been on the phone with his insurance, but right now it's looking like the damage could cost him about $300 out of pocket. He's just glad nothing was stolen from his car.

"Frustrated," he said. "I got up at 5 in the morning to go to work and came out to two police cars and this. So not the best way to start a morning, but it could have been worse. We're blessed this is all it is."

Some of the car windows appeared to be shot with a BB gun. Others were possibly struck with a hammer.

Kyle Whistle is also cleaning up the mess. Police knocked on his door about 2:30 a.m. to tell him his SUV was vandalized. He said the crime seems random.

"They obviously didn't take anything out," Whistle said. "I mean, I have my radar detector and various things in the car, and clothes, hats and things, so they obviously were just trying to do vandalism. So it's obviously something not great, but I don't feel unsafe."

Now Whistle is working with his car insurance company to figure out how this will affect him.

"I've been on the phone with insurance this morning, so I've had to not go to work and get everything done today to handle this, because obviously with the weather, driving around, we'll find out throughout the rest of the day."

Even though it wasn't the best way to start his day, Whistle is staying positive.

"Still going to have a great Thanksgiving, still have a lot of things to be thankful for," he said. "This is just a minor hiccup."

Some neighbors are questioning whether the vandalism was related to the grand jury decision made in Ferguson, Missouri, Monday night.

"Maybe to do with that thing up in Missouri, I don't know," Hansen said. "That's word of mouth, but nobody knows for sure but whoever was doing it."

Police said nothing about this crime points to it being related to the riots in Ferguson.
