AUBURNDALE, Fla. -

Officials say a Polk County couple surrendered 47 dogs after sheriff's deputies found them stacked in cages without food and water.

The Ledger of Lakeland reports Randall Huggins and Bernice Walskey were arrested Friday on 40 counts each of confining an animal without sufficient food. Walskey was also charged with making and selling synthetic marijuana.

Polk County deputies say they were investigating reports of drug activity Friday night when they arrived at the home in Auburndale.

Inside the home, they found the dogs -- most of them Dachshunds -- stacked in cages. The dogs were standing in their own feces and urine. Deputies say the smell overwhelmed the home and the dogs showed signs of fleas and skin conditions.

The dogs were taken to a shelter.
