An appeals court has denied a motion for a new trial in a Putnam County death penalty case regarding the home invasion, rape and murder of a 77-year-old woman.

Connie Ray Israel was convicted of killing Esther Hagans in her home in 1991.

The 11th Circuit Court of appeals denied a motion from Israel's appeals lawyer for a new trial.

The lawyer had argued ineffective counsel on the part of the trial lawyer.

Israel remains on death row.
