Craig Airport runway extension lawsuits dead

Lawsuits filed in 2010 by Craig Air Center and Sky Harbor Corp to force the city of Jacksonville to extend the runway of Jacksonville Executive at Craig Airport are dead.

The plaintiffs won't pursue them in federal appeals court.

The Jacksonville Port Authority said extending the 4,000 foot runway by 1,600 feet would allow for more and larger planes, which would be an economic development boon.

Opponents said the larger planes would be louder, and the increased air traffic would mean a higher risk of a plane going down in one of the surrounding neighborhoods.

The City Council approved the extension despite several big protests, but several members soon announced they would change their votes.

Before it could come back for a second vote, JaxPort withdrew the bill.
