Direct deposit issue affects Compass Bank customers

VIDEO: A computer glitch at Compass Banks has THOUSANDS of customers upset. Many of them were unable to withdraw their money.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

A direct deposit issue had thousands of Compass Bank customers nationwide upset for hours Friday.

Customers complained they had no access to direct deposit funds from their employers. Bank officials said the problem was the result of a "computer glitch."

As of about 3 p.m., the bank said the problem had been fixed.

Some customers said they will be switching banks after the debacle. Others like Isabel Garvin said they had rent due earlier Friday and could not pay it because of the snafu.

"I checked to see if my payroll was in the bank account this morning and it wasn't there," Garvin said.

Local tellers told customers to be patient, and the bank offered to "lend" them money if they could prove their employers direct deposit into their accounts.

Tax return checks and Social Security checks were also affected by the problem.

Bank officials wouldn't take Channel 4's calls Friday morning and at one local branch wouldn't comment, but the bank did release a statement on its Facebook page that read:

"BBVA Compass is working to resolve the issues impacting our online banking, ACH deposits systems, and 1-800 Compass customers. Customers in need of immediate access to funds from a recurring ACH deposit, such as a payroll deposit or monthly Social Security payment, will have access to those funds immediately by visiting one of our banking centers."

Customer Earl Durrance said this wasn't the first time his direct deposit had been delayed, and he's fed up with waiting for his money.

"I've already decided I'm closing the account out and going with another financial institution," Durrance said.

Customers said they were worried about their accounts being in the negative.

"It's really inconvenient for me now because I have to see what's bouncing my account," said customer Rev. John Boyd. "I checked with my job, and this is the only bank having these problems."
