Does web site facilitate prostitution?
State Sen. Darren Soto is asking Florida’s Attorney General to shut down a web site because he says it facilitates prostitution.
SeekingArrangement.com claims to be nothing more than a dating site that connects so-called rich women and men, or so-called “sugar daddies,” with young women and men.
The website says a modern gentleman is a mentor, sponsor or benefactor. A “sugar baby” is defined as a student, actress or model who deserves someone who will pamper and empower them by providing mental, emotional and financial assistance.
Seeking Arrangements has been online since 2006. It claims to have 2 million members, 70 percent of whom are in the United States, including Miami, Tampa and Orlando. It says the site is for those seeking mutually beneficial relationships and arrangements.
Soto claims it’s nothing more than prostitution.
"You got to call, it is what you see,” Soto said. “An hour-long hotel room date in exchange for $400 and sexual relations, that's prostitution.”
An interview request with the Seeking Arrangements was countered with a request for a live interview, so the company’s comments could not be edited. A compromise was made so that the company would answer one question and their answered would be unedited.
Seeking Arrangement’s Brandon Wade was asked to respond to Soto’s allegation that the website facilitates prostitution.
"My response is sugar daddy dating is about finding a wealthy boyfriend," Wade said. "It's no different than what the millionaire matchmakers doing, and at SeekingArrangement.com we maintain a strict policy that prostitution and even escorts are not allowed.”
Off camera, Wade said shutting down his website would be like revoking everyone’s driver’s license to stop drunk driving.
The Attorney General responded quickly, saying this office will look into the website. The letter was also forwarded to the Department of Law Enforcement.
The Department of Law Enforcement says it received the request and will look into the website.
