A dog brought to the city's Animal Care and Protective Services with a gunshot wound will be taken for surgery Friday morning.
The male doberman/German Shepard mix estimated to be about 10 months old was found Wednesday near the intersection of Dunn Avenue and Interstate 295. The dog was shot in the left leg and an X-ray indicates the extent of the damage will likely require that the leg be removed.
City workers are working area veterinarians and the public to fund the cost of of the surgery, which they believe will surpass $1,000.
Anyone with information about the shooting or who the dog belongs to is asked to call 904-630-CITY and ask for Animal Care and Control. Anyone wishing to make donations for the dog's care can contact Jacksonville Veterinary Medical Society, Friends of Jacksonville Animals or Animal Care and Protective Services and specify that the money is for this dog.
