JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

The Jacksonville Human Society says a dog who was treated and adopted after collapsing from a serious medical condition during a walk at the humane society will lead the organization's largest fundraising walk.

JHS says Miley, who nearly died of respiratory distress, is expected to lead the Jacksonville Humane Society Mutt March on March 2.

"Miley is the perfect dog to represent JHS at Mutt March," said Denise Deisler, JHS executive director. "She, and so many others like her, have overcome medical obstacles to bring great joy to their adoptive families. That wouldn't be possible without the funds raised at Mutt March."

The human society said they are seeking support to raise $100,000 to care for shelter pets at the Mutt March fun walk and festival.

"We are depending on Mutt March to raise enough money to care for the thousands of pets who rely on JHS for medical care and shelter each year," said Deisler.

The Mutt March fun walk and festival is scheduled for Saturday, March 2 from 9 am to 1 pm at the Jacksonville Landing. Organizers of the event said participants will be able to enjoy entertainment, activities for pets and kids, a silent auction, vendors and a walk along the St. Johns River.

JHS Board Member Lis'e Everly, last year's top fundraiser, will walk Miley. JHS says Everly and Miley will lead hundreds of other pets and their families on the approximately 2-mile walk.

"Miley's family loves her dearly despite the fact that it is difficult to care for her because of her medical issues," said Everly. "Dogs like Miley stand by us offering us unconditional love, greeting us with enthusiasm and making us smile through the saddest of tears. I am walking with Miley in the Mutt March to ensure JHS has the funds needed to care for all of the pets waiting for families with which to share their love."

Major Mutt March sponsors include Winn-Dixie, North Florida Sales and Pet Paradise.
