ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -

Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol said an elderly woman was killed in a crash Saturday evening near St. Augustine Shores in St. Johns County.

According to the FHP report, a 1999 Buick driven by William Sopper, 84, was going south on U.S. Highway 1 just after 6 p.m. and attempted to turn onto Southwood Lake Drive. FHP said Sopper turned directly in front of a Honda that was going north on U.S. 1.

FHP said the Honda struck the passenger side of the Buick, causing it to overturn onto its roof.

FHP said Catherine Smith, 89, a passenger in the Buick, died at the scene. Sopper was flown to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center in critical condition.

The driver of the Honda, Anthony Gomez, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Flagler hospital.

According to the FHP report, charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

Both northbound lanes of U.S. 1 were closed for just over two ours hours.
