Police are making a plea to the community for help solving a killing that happened on the side of Interstate 95 in Glynn County, Ga., last week.
The family of 49-year-old Richard Hollis, a Jacksonville man who was shot and killed while changing a flat tire, is hoping $10,000 in reward money motivates someone to come forward with information.
Glynn County police said that in the early morning hours of Sept. 10, Hollis was shot to death while stopped on the side of I-95 North, near exit 42 outside of Brunswick. Hollis' family says the motive for the killing was robbery.
There is a part of Ruth Grove, Hollis' mother-in-law, that dreads the idea of never knowing who killed her son-in-law.
"It is just so painful to think somebody could do it and then get away with it and then, of course, hurt somebody else," Grove said.
Hollis' family said goodbye to him in a funeral over the weekend. Flowers left over from the service now fill their house. So does pain and grief.
"We desperately want them to find out who did this and bring them to justice," Grove said. "They don't deserve to live. They don't."
Investigators released a flyer announcing a reward for information. The flyer also includes an image of the crime scene, with Hollis' 2009 Toyota Camry still sitting on the side of the road and his spare tire resting on the back bumper.
Police are looking for people who were in the area the morning of Sept. 10 between 4:30 and 6:45. They want to talk to the driver of a red or maroon car that was spotted leaving the area. Investigators also want to speak to the driver of a grey Ford pickup truck and a green pickup truck towing a trailer. Police say those drivers could have seen something that can help the case.
The family is now waiting to see if the reward pushes someone to come forward.
"Sometimes people who are evil enough to do these kinds of things will actually brag about it, like a slip of the tongue," Grove said. "I just want so badly for them to find who did this. They should be taken off the Earth."
Anyone with any information about the killing is asked to call police at 912-554-7802 or Silent Witness at 912-264-1333.
