Fla. county creates registry for unmarried couples
Couples that aren't married but want similar rights will be able to participate in a domestic partnership registry in Volusia County.
The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports councilmembers voted in favor of the registry by a 6-1 vote Thursday.
The registry will allow unmarried partners the rights to hospital visitations and decision making on important matters including child education. It was modeled after a similar registry in Orlando.
Partners will receive a laminated card from the county confirming their status.
Joe Saunders, the state field director for Equality Florida, says the registry is progressive and will help recruit and retain businesses with employees who have partners.
