Authorities in Bryan County say the principal of an elementary school in nearby Liberty County has been killed in a car accident.

WTOC-TV reported 62-year-old Mary M. Guiendon died Wednesday after an accident on a highway near Richmond Hill around 6:30 a.m. She was the principal at Button Gwinnett Elementary School in Hinesville.

Georgia State Patrol officials say a school bus stopped for children and Guiendon rear-ended a semi-truck that was stopped behind the bus. She was pronounced dead at the scene and police say she was not wearing a seat belt.

There were no other reported injuries and Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident.

Bryan County School Supervisor Judy Scherer announced her death to staff and parents with this statement:

"It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of some very tragic news. This morning, our Principal, Mary Guiendon, lost her life in an automobile accident while traveling to work. Students were informed with great care today and grief counselors were on-hand to assist with the needs of students and staff. Please notify us if there is anything we can do to assist you and your child in dealing with this very sad news."
