NORCROSS, Ga. -

Gwinnett County police say an officer responding to a reported home invasion fatally shot a man during a confrontation.

Police say a man tried to force his way into a Norcross apartment where two kids were home alone around 7:30 a.m. Monday waiting to go to school. The kids made it out safely and went to the home of a neighbor who called police.

The first responding officer encountered 24-year-old Eric Andrews of Atlanta, who was leaving the apartment. Police say Andrews was holding a tire iron. The officer drew his gun and yelled to Andrews to drop the tire iron. Police say Andrews didn't comply and walked toward the officer, who responded by shooting Andrews.

Andrews died at a hospital. The officer wasn't injured.

The incident is under investigation.
