Police are investigating after human remains were found in woods across the street from one of Jacksonville's busiest shopping centers.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office homicide unit on Friday afternoon was called to the corner of Town Center Parkway and Brightman Boulevard -- across the road from the Publix.

Investigators said the remains have been in the woods for possibly several months.

Police said they will continue to work the discovery as a crime scene and will be there all day Saturday trying to collect as much of the remains as possible.

They said they don't know the cause of death or who the remains belong to.

The remains were found more than 100 yards into the woods.

Investigators said not all the remains are in the woods. They said parts of the body are missing, possibly from animals.
