ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -

A 28-year-old St. Johns County man charged with felony cruelty to animals has been allowed to withdraw his plea of no contest.

Randal Hart is charged with stabbing his dog, Amber. After his arrest, Hart gave up ownership of the dog, and it was adopted by St. Johns County Deputy Dan Sorrells.

Hart told the judge Wednesday he suffers from schizophrenia and didn't understand what he was doing.

He has a new lawyer now.
