ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -

A 23-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a crash Tuesday afternoon in St. Johns County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Zacharie Vanekeris, of St. Augustine, was riding southbound on U.S. Highway 1 at Gun Club Road in the right lane at a high speed just before 1 p.m.

The driver of a box truck, 43-year-old Phillip Bailey of St. Augustine, saw a pedestrian on the shoulder of the roadway and changed into the left lane to keep a safer distance between his truck and the person, troopers said. They said after passing the pedestrian, the box truck then changed back into the right lane of U.S. 1.

Vanekeris was approaching at a high speed and struck the right rear of the box truck, troopers said. They said his motorcycle then went onto the grass shoulder and tree line, and Vanekeris was thrown off into the tree line.

Vanekeris died at the scene. He was wearing a helmet.

Bailey was not hurt.

The crash blocked one lane of southbound U.S. 1 for about two hours for the investigation.

Troopers said charges are pending further investigation.
