JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

Sen. Bill Nelson has filed a bill aimed at keeping 149 air traffic control towers at small airports around the country open as the Federal Aviation Administration tries to close them because of the forced budget cuts.

There are 14 airports on the closing list in Florida, including Northeast Florida Regional Airport in St. Augustine.

They're currently slated to close in June.

Nelson is one of the co-sponsors of the Protect Our Skies Act, along with Democrat Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Republican Jerry Moran of Kansas.

The law could be discussed at a Senate hearing on aviation safety on Tuesday.
