A SWAT team used heavy equipment overnight to force entry into a San Jose Manor Drive apartment where a man had apparently doused himself with gasoline and threatened to set himself on fire.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says the conflict started just before 7 p.m. Monday. That's when the man dowsed himself with gasoline in front of the officers and became aggressive with police. Police said the man told officers that he wanted to kill himself.
Police told Channel 4 that Chavez Trujillo, 48, was inside his apartment late Monday night after walking in and out of the unit. Police said they attempted to negotiate with the suspect.
People in seven neighboring units were evacuated for several hours until officers forced their way into the unit and found the man passed out in the unit and he was taken into custody without resistance. Officers noted he had a strong odor of gasoline on his clothing and body.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says the man was taken to Shands Medical Center for evaluation under Florida's Baker Act.
Lt. Jimmy Judge told Channel 4 the man was distraught over his ex-wife moving to Miami with their child.
The police report says the porch and living room of the apartment sustained significant structural damage from the forcible extraction. No weapons were found in the apartment.
