PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -

A woman suffered life-threatening injuries when she was thrown from a golf cart in Ponte Vedra Beach on Sunday.

Traffic Homicide Investigators with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office
are investigating the single-vehicle crash that occurred late Sunday afternoon.
Deputies responded to the area of Pablo Road, just west of Ponte Vedra Boulevard, in reference to a crash involving serious injuries at 5:15 p.m.

A golf cart driven by Cohen Lairsey, 23, of Atlantic Beach, turned left from the cart path to cross Pablo Road to reach the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club when the passenger, Katherine Callaway, 22, of Ponte Vedra, was ejected from the cart onto the pavement.

Investigators say Callaway was transported to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center with critical injuries.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Lairsey told investigators that the victim was texting with both hands when she was ejected from the cart.

Investigators say charges are pending.
