Tim Brown Sr. was killed Monday night when a car entered his lane on U.S. Highway 17.

Tim Brown Sr., a candidate for Putnam County sheriff, died Monday night after a southbound car rear-ended on U.S. 17 was knocked into the path of his southbound pickup truck.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a car driven by 77-year-old Gloria Adams, of Satsuma, rear-ended a car driven by Jeffrey Miller, 63, also of Satsuma. Troopers said Miller's Ford Escort was pushed into the oncoming lane, where it was struck by Brown's pickup.

The wreck occurred about 10:15 p.m. on U.S. 17 at Butler Drive.

Brown, of East Palatka, was taken to Putnam Community Hospital, where he died. Adams was also taken to Putnam Community with minor injures.

Miller was flown to Shands Medical Center in Gainesville with critical injuries.  Angela Wynn, a passenger in Miller's car, was airlifted to Orange Park Medical Center with serious injuries.

According to the FHP report, charges are pending.
