A gunman suspected of robbing a Palm Bay store is shot by a police officer, according to officials.

PALM BAY, Fla. -

Palm Bay police officers shot an armed robbery suspect late Tuesday night outside a Walgreens near Brevard Community College.

Several witnesses inside the store on Malabar Road called 911 just after 11 p.m. when a gunman entered the store, put on a mask and robbed the pharmacist.

Officers arrived at the store, which is open 24 hours a day, as the armed robbery was happening, Palm Bay police spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez said.

When the gunman tried to run away, shots were fired and he was hit, Martinez said.  The gunman was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.

Palm Bay police will investigate the robbery while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the police shooting.

The names of the gunman and the officer who shot him were not immediately released.

No one else was hurt during the robbery and the shooting.
