JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

A 68-year-old man was struck and killed this morning while crossing Hendricks Avenue at River Oaks Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say Charles Wilson Jr. was walking west across Hendricks just before 7 a.m. into the path of a northbound Honda Civic. According to the accident report, the driver, Andrew Scuderi, tried to stop and take evasive action, but struck Wilson, who was taken to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center, where he died.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office told Channel 4 that Wilson retired in 2004 as a sergeant after 36 with the department.  He returned to work as a bailiff sergeant, where he worked until seven weeks ago.

Police closed all lanes of Hendricks Avenue between Emerson and San Jose for more than an hour while the accident was investigated and cleared. The northbound lanes of River Oaks Road are closed as well.

According to the FHP report, no one was charged in the accident, which remained under investigation.
