CROWN POINT, Ind. -

Two St. Augustine businessmen were identified as the victims of Wednesday's plane crash in a wooded area about a mile short of Gary-Chicago International Airport in northwestern Indiana.

Lake County coroner Merrilee Frey said she used dental records to identify the remains of 48-year-old Vincent Vaccarello and 45-year-old Patsy Crisafi, who were killed when the single-engine Cirrus SR2 crashed into woods behind a elementary school about 11:20 a.m.

The plane is registered to Gandy AIR LLC in St. Augustine, according to the FAA.  It had left St. Augustine on Tuesday morning and spent that night in Symrna, Tenn., before taking off for the Gary/Chicago airport.

National Transportion Safety Board air safety investigator Michael Folkerts told the Chicago Sun-Times that officials completed their on-scene investigation, and they are moving pieces of the aircraft to another location for further analysis. Folkerts said a preliminary report will be released in about 10 days.

Folkerts said this plane did not have a data recorder, but there are potentially some other sources of flight data.

Eyewitness Frances Guyton-Ward said the plane’s engine sputtered, cutting in and out, and then “the plane just fell out of the sky.”
