PALM COAST, Fla. -

An 88-year-old Palm Coast woman died early Thursday morning and her 95-year-old husband was hospitalized after their home caught fire around 12:30 a.m.

Deputies said Edith Moss called to report her car was on fire in her garage on Floral Court. Dispatchers notified the Palm Coast Fire Department and told Moss to evacuate the home, but she said she couldn't do that.

When deputies arrived on scene, the garage was fully engulfed in flames. Deputies said they were unable to find the residents.

The first city fire unit to arrive began a search for the couple as the second arriving units began fighting the fire.

Within minutes, firefighters found Moss in a rear bedroom. She died en route to the Florida Hospital Flagler.

Her husband, Nathaniel, was transported to the hospital, where he was being treated for some inhalation.

The State Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate the blaze.
