Police: Shots fired at car kill man, injure woman

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Homicide detectives say multiple shots fired into a moving car on Tuesday afternoon in a New Town neighborhood killed one man and left a woman hospitalized.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, the victims were driving in the 1400 block of West Sixth Street about 2:30 p.m. when several people shot at the car. The man and woman drove to UF Health Jacksonville, where the man, 37-year-old Jack Hoover, died. The woman was reported in stable condition.

"The scene is pretty active right now," Sgt. Michael Paul said just after 5 p.m. "We do have a lot of shell casings in the street, which leads us to believe people were standing in the street or at houses shooting at the car."

Paul said because there were multiple caliber shells recovered, they know there were at least two gunman. Until police process the car, they aren't sure if anyone in the vehicle returned fire.

The crime scene was large and the evidence collection and search for witnesses were hampered by heavy rain that began shortly after police arrived.

Police say there is currently no suspect information or motive for the shooting. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
