"It's an ordinance which makes it a law.  And all ordinances require 2 readings and 2 votes by the commission before they can become enacted," said Mayor Carolyn Woods.

The proposed Human Rights Ordinance will add explicit protections for residents based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression in employment, housing and public accommodation.

The commission agreed last month to bring the HRO to a vote. The commission will have a second reading of the legislation during a community workshop on July 28. The last and final vote will be held at the regularly scheduled Commission meeting on Aug. 11.

"It passed on the first reading and it will come back for a second reading and if it passes at the August 11th meeting it will be an ordinance in the city of Atlantic Beach," said Woods.

A majority vote is required for the ordinance to become law.
