Man shoots woman in attempted home invasion

Woman shot once in the leg

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman is in stable condition after being shot in an attempted home invasion robbery near Talleyrand Avenue early Wednesday morning.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, just before 2 a.m., a man opened the window of a one-story home on East 24th Street, where a woman was sleeping inside.

Investigators said the crooks crawled through a window of the home and when the woman inside heard a noise, she became more than just the victim of a break-in.

"The suspect opened bedroom window, attempted to force way inside. Once inside, saw the suspect, tried to flee the room, as she fled the room the suspect fired four rounds, one of which struck her in the leg," said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Detective John Venosh.

Police were continuing to search for the suspect.

The woman was also the victim of a home invasion robbery early Saturday morning involving two men, according to a police report.

Channel 4 spoke with a woman Wednesday night who didn't want her face on camera, but told Channel 4 the home invasion has hit close to home for her.

"I'm having the window repaired. Having the burglar bars put up. They should be put up before the weekend. Right now I have somebody cutting down the trees that gives them areas to hide in. it's just a lot of my stuff I have to do to keep doing to keep myself protected," the woman told Channel 4.

She explained Wednesday that she can sympathize with how scared the woman who was shot must have been when she started hearing something at her own window.

"I found out that night that I wasn't as brave as I thought I was. It wasn't as much for me, but more for him because I don't know how many of them was out there. And I don't know what they had on them. All I know was my situation inside and I just felt helpless," said the woman.

Anyone with any information about either case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
