JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office bomb squad determined that a suspicious device they were investigating Thursday night was found to be safe.

Lt. Jesse York told Channel 4 that residents from the Westland Park apartments on Collins Road called officials after they saw a suspicious package inside the property.

York told Channel 4 that the device was a suitcase. York said the suitcase was situated near a utility building belonging to JEA, which concerned authorities and they called the bomb squad in to investigate.

Residents in the area were evacuated from their homes and a portion of Collins Road was shut down as a precaution Thursday night while the sheriff’s office investigated.

Collins Road was reopened just before 11 p.m.
