ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -

A nine-year-old boy who was reportedly pulled from shore by strong currents near the Matanzas Inlet was rescued and is being evaluated, according to St Johns County Fire Rescue.

He was conscious and breathing.

The initial 911 call was received at 4:30 p.m. from a man who said his son was being pulled into the ocean and could no longer be seen amid heavy surf.

Multiple fire and marine rescue units responded from stations in St. Augustine Beach and Crescent Beach to carry out the rescue operation.

Two SJCFR watercraft were in water when the child was located.
