MEIGS, Ga. -

The uncle of a 9-year-old boy killed in a south Georgia house fire says he tried desperately to save his nephew but "I just couldn't do it."

Brandon Copeland spoke with WALB-TV after the blaze early Sunday killed young Jobris Copeland at his family's home in Meigs, about 45 miles south of Albany.

Five people were in the house, Copeland says, and all escaped except for Jobris. The uncle said: "I told him I wasn't going to let him die."

Copeland says he pulled an air-conditioning unit and security bars from the windows trying to get to his nephew, but it was too late.

The boy's grandmother, 56-year-old Queen Copeland, was hospitalized for burns and smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
