JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police say a woman is fighting for her life after she was struck by a car on the Southside on Thursday morning.
Jacksonville police were called to South Kernan Boulevard near Beach Boulevard near the University of North Florida about 4 a.m.

"Just before 4 this morning, investigation indicates there was some sort of dispute between a couple of occupants in the vehicle. The vehicle stopped in the turn lane on the northbound side of Kernan Boulevard," said JSO Detective J.D. Gregory.
Gregory said a man driving the car heading northbound on Kernan was fighting with a woman in the passenger seat. He said the man stopped the car and the woman got out.
"One of them got out the vehicle and at some point attempted to cross the southbound lanes," Gregory said. "A separate vehicle not involved in the dispute was southbound on Kernan Boulevard, did not see the pedestrian before she stepped out in front of him."
Police said the car struck the woman.
After the crash, the driver who hit the woman called police and stayed on the scene. The other driver who was arguing with the woman also stayed on the scene until police arrived.
"She was transported to University of Florida health. She is currently -- injuries are considered life-threatening," Gregory said.
While police investigated, all Southbound lanes of Kernan near Beach were closed.
Gregory said pedestrians being hit by vehicles are becoming all too common in the area.
"It's a bad thing right now -- a bad string of pedestrian crashes in Duval County as a whole," he said.
Police said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
