FANNING SPRINGS, Fla. -

A 6-year-old boy is dead after two family dogs attacked him outside his North Central Florida home.

Levy County Sheriff Bobby McCallum told the Gainesville Sun that the attack occurred Thursday morning after the boy's father went to work.

McCallum says the boy was followed by the pit bulls when he went outside to play and that an aunt watching the boy did not notice anything unusual.

Later, the aunt looked outside and saw the boy lying in the driveway.

McCallum says the boy had been around the dogs for about a month, so they were familiar with him.  He says one possible theory is that the dogs were fighting or playing with each other and somehow the child tried to separate them and got entangled.

Deputies did not release the name of the child or family members because they have not been able to locate the boy's mother yet. They hope to locate her soon.

The sheriff says the dogs were well cared for and had current shots. They were seized by Levy County Animal Control after the attack.

The Dixie County chaplain was called in to help the family.
